Truth

I guess now I know why we had to meet again, there were just some things that had to be settled...
2 years apart, the story which has not been finished...
I didn't have to know about it that way. I knew something was amiss, but I never wanted to jump to conclusions...
Am I really the last one to know? You didn't have to hide it. It would have saved everyone so much drama and trouble.
Sick to the core...
I don't want to see you again... But I know that it is impossible.
I wish I had never met you, but at least by this fate I have learnt an important lesson...
The story is finished now, but will always be told as the story only I didn't know...

The Misadventures Down Under 2: Project Build A Teddy

There was this quirky little program in uni today organized by the Student Ambassador Club, Project Build A Teddy. At first we didn't give much thought to it because the guy who promoted it after lecture was so damn ugly no f##ks were given but later because a friend of mine came round asking we all decided to go.

Basically the program goes like this. You order a teddy bear, you stuff it (sounds like the toy factory got free labour...), and you choose to donate it or keep it. All earnings go to the Melbourne Royal Childrens' Hospital for pain and palliative management in the paediatrics department and the teddies go to the children in the ward (awww...). Which is pretty good because although kids are annoying, they are still humans, and humans have feelings, and one does not deny care to any human being in pain, even though they are annoying little kids... (•‿•)

We got there after lectures, got our teddies, made a wish and started stuffing. Every teddy also has his/her/its own birth certificate. And you can name your teddy too!

So...
Tadaa!!! o(≧∇≦)o

This is Benny. I named him Benny because... I can. Thou shalt not knowest the meaning behind the name of thee... (Grins) Nah actually if you know who my latest celeb crush is then it's a dead giveaway...(=`〜´=)

Benny was wearing a scarf too, but his big-ass birth cert covered it up and now you don't see it.
So knowing that Benny (and my money) was going to go for a good cause it really is a nice warm, fluffy, feeling inside. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

Good luck Benny! Get well soon kids!

P.S. Geez these Japanese emoticons are really fun! (≧ ω ≦)

5 weeks ended like that...

Started out with me being jobless and depressed. So I told myself it would be fine and I would make the most out of my time, which I did. Finished Sherlock after much bugging from friends (Thanks to you people, I'm now Cumberbatched, and life has no more meaning besides waiting for the release of season 3...)
Look at him... Just look at him and say that he is perfect... (Dies from cardiac arrest)

Anyway... I also resumed online Korean lessons and started playing around with photoshop. If I was going to be jobless I didn't want all that time to go to waste. I also started applying for jobs at pharmacies around the city and nearby suburbs.

Suddenly realized that my reason for learning Korean deviated from interest in K-pop to interest learning foreign languages. The hell I'm getting old or something...

But by the end of the week 1, I was feeling antsy. I needed money badly. My reserve was running low and I didn't want to ask my parents for daily allowance (although they were more than happy to provide and were worried if I had enough to get by.) The pharmacies got people in, I was still jobless.

Desperate, I called my old manager at the cafe and told him I was happy to cover a few shifts for him. He sounded happy that there was finally a sucker who could work 5 days a week or more.

So much for a few shifts...

So I resumed my job as a waitress, without even knowing what my current wage is. I'm expecting it to be 10 per hour, though I'm no longer considered a trainee. So there I was running up and down 10 hours a day, answering to customers, serving them food, clearing their leftovers, cleaning toilets, entertaining weird little old ladies with no one to talk to. Seriously... They don't pay me enough to do this...

One day a post on our uni cohort's group made me sit bolt upright. A pharmacy in Fitzroy was looking to hire 2nd year students. Fitzroy is a pretty happening suburb, cafes lining the streets, very hip and happening sort of place. I called my unimate who posted the notice and dropped my resume in the place. Few days later during my break I received a call to go in for an interview. YEW! OK actually I never thought I'd get so far. Now what?

So on Thursday I went in for an interview and almost crapped my pants. In fact now when I try to recall what I said or what exactly happened it all seems so surreal (not in a good way). Now fingers crossed. I'll have to wait.

Magically the manager at the convenience store gave me a call and asked me to take up another job. O.O Hmm... didn't you just fire me? Stockkeeping. Go in once a week to check all stock, produce 2 Excel sheets and get paid the exact same amount as before. Sounds... Tantalizing... Accepted.

Today was my last day at the cafe. It was fun being maknae (besides the fact you get teased a lot by the others... Some times a little too much...) Tomorrow uni starts and it's back to swotting. I did not work as hard as I could have during the first sem, which explains the pretty meh results. So this sem I'm going to make up for that.

Second sem, let's go!

Sunday, 23 June 2013

If anyone asked me recently "How are you?" and I said not too bad, or good, or some sort of not-more-than five-words answer indicating yep I'm not dead yet...

I lied.
But I'm not dead yet.

On Friday I left my wallet at the train station and since I was worried it was a goner I called the bank to cancel my card. But well I went back yesterday and what do you know it's there intact! (Tears of joy and elation) The thing is now I can't get money out from the bank without the card without a photo ID or something.

That wasn't much to worry about actually...

Yesterday I had work as usual and since I was the one who worked the first shift of the day had to print out a report and count the cash in the register. It was OK, well actually there was a discrepancy of approximately $5, which is within the allowed discrepancy range. Called the boss and she told me to take out some cash and put it in another compartment (judging by the value I'm assuming it's one of my co-worker's salary.) Did that and before I could reset the value a customer came in.

All the time, when you're doing nothing no one comes in, when you have something to do or go to the washroom, people come. =__________________=

So after the customer left I reported the value that the boss asked me to. Then the busybody part of my mind went wait a minute shouldn't you add that to the reported value?

Oh dear brain...

So I reset the values once again. And when the boss popped by she said if you reset them twice you get addition of both reported values.
._____________________.

Fine whatever. So she did the resetting and counted the money and suddenly. OH look! A $35 discrepancy where did that come from? Last time OK? No more mistakes like this. This is too much.

What wait are you saying I took out $35? Or I gave extra $35 change to customers? How the hell is the possible when people coming in are paying you by card or $5 notes?

Oh fine whatever I will be more careful.

That isn't the end of the story. At the end of the shift my co-worker who took over and I were counting the cash in the register and it just seemed weird. Our values tallied each others' but how the fuck did it get so little? In fact it seemed less than the reported value which is... Just strange. And the only cashout that day was $20. Shrug. Maybe I was imagining things.

BIG MISTAKE.

This morning she called me in and my intuition told me it wasn't good.

I was right. I got dismissed.
The morning shift today found a $150 discrepancy in the values reported and the cash in the register.

So now, I have no income, no job, most importantly a job where you can spend most of your time doing your own stuff...

I really don't know how to put it. $35 I can still believe but now blaming me of giving $150 change is just outrageous! Or a more acceptable reason was to accuse me of stealing. I understand that she had every reason to think so because according to her everything wrong happened during my shift, but why would I steal that money? Couldn't I just clean out the whole drawer run away and never go back? I wouldn't have to work for at least a month! Yea she doesn't know me so fair enough. But what if the error occurred when SHE was resetting the values?

I just think it's fucked up. And I feel fucking useless now. Can't fucking get good grades, can't keep a fucking job for more than 4 months, fucking fat, can't fucking socialize. What can I do right?

And now I'm ranting so that makes me a whiner and an attention hog too...

It's OK. I'll survive...

P.S. Sorry for giving too many fucks today, but that's the only word I can think of which can appropriately describe what I'm feeling right now. Unless you want me to say "My emotions right now are sinking into that dark void..." Never mind...

The Misadventures Down Under 2: 工作语录 2

My job... Former job...

Waitress. Taking orders, serving people. Yep, sounds simple. And that was what I thought before I started this job. I didn't know I had to usher, order, serve, clean and do whatever shit anyone else asks you to do. No I don't hate it I pretty much like it actually xD

Usually the cafe is pretty busy around peak hours, which are meal times and you just have to churn at 100 km/h. Absolutely no time to stop. You take an order here, there another customer is demanding why his croquettes aren't on the table yet. Meanwhile the sushi bar in front is ringing the bell indicating an order is ready. Suddenly customers stand up and you have to rush to clear away everything so that the table is ready for the next table in the shortest time frame possible. So multitasking is pretty important. And at this hour you really really hope someone gives you random shit to do, like refilling the sauce, peeling prawns, washing the cups, drying the cutlery etc.

And there are the times when the cafe is absolutely nice peaceful and, well it's not empty but, less people in there. At this time you'll want to look busy so no one asks you to do random shit and you can't enjoy that tranquility. So you pick up a pitcher of water and pretend to walk around asking anyone if they'd like a refill. Or else you hide behind the sink and wash the cups or dry the cutlery, just so you don't stand out enough and provide an easy target for anyone needing help to do anything else or just plain get blamed for slacking on the job.

And the drinks bar... You never want to get stuck there... Because once you go in and shit gets real, there is no way you're ever going to make it out of there... At peak hours there'll be endless cups to wash and endless drinks to make... No, you'll never make it out of there until the crowd dies down...

Well that's just what I feel... So doing random shit instead of serving qqgg customers are my preference... Because... They're just plain qqgg people out there... It really is an eye-opener.

Some people I have met throughout my time here.

1. The indecisive guy
Says he's ready to order, then lets you wait 1238109 minutes as he tries to make a decision, or else banter with his partner/s about what he/she/it/I/you/we/they should get. Well don't mind these people when it's quiet. But when it's busy and you have a thousand shits on your mind about which table you haven't served or cleared or anything else, all you feel like doing is pulling all your hair out, scream and run around in circles...

2. The inquisitive guy
Ponders over the menu, then looks at you and asks: "What do you recommend?" There was once customers asked me over the cooking method of beef I'd recommend... I don't even eat beef, and the closest meat to that I eat is mutton, which... I don't even use those cooking methods... And worst of all I'd never tried anything on the menu before... Besides the takoyaki. Yea. So I had to once again put on my best Oscar-winning-face-of-a-smarty-pants and summon all I have learnt from random cooking shows I watch on TV. "Oh if you stew beef wrongly it could possibly go quite tough, so I'd recommend you order the barbecued ones instead?"

Bullshit I don't even know if it's true or not... And they actually went for BBQ beef... I stayed well away from that table after order that night...

3. The interrogator
Occasionally there will be friendly, usually middle-aged or elderly people who will walk in and ask about you, where you're from, where you're studying, where you stay, what colour your underwear is... Then they'd comment on your language. There was an elderly couple who were surprised that Malaysians could speak English, and I have had people telling me I sounded American (Pretty much an epic fail for my Aussie accent...), Mainland Chinese, Taiwanese. Sometimes you really can't stay to chat, but they're so friendly you feel really bad to just walk out on them... Ah well...

4. The couples
Oh yeah... Them... I look at them, and pretend not to see what they're doing... And what I see cannot be unseen... Especially when serving food it gets all awkward because when you want to put the food on the table they'd have their hands linked across the table looking so lovingly into each others' eyes. And here you come to tear them apart... (Sinister music plays, here comes the light-bulb...)

5. The small eater
Regretfully I fall into this category... xD Well I don't mind you asking about portions but ordering 3 slices of sashimi... Oh fine well I don't mind perhaps but it makes it quite hard for us to enter order... We have to do the math ourselves. Divide and times the price all over again so... Maybe I'll try not to do that anymore and just grab someone out to share. Sorry to all the waiters and waitresses who once felt like kicking me xD

6. The picky eaters
No onions, switching a sauce with another sauce, sushi set omit all the big rolls only small rolls wanted, handrolls and inari set omit inari make it all handrolls, orders ramen but only for the soup not the ramen... And the list goes on and on... Well this category is much better than the next category. At least you go only for what you want and you don't throw stuff away afterwards.

7. The first-world-citizen-who-does-not-know-the-value-of-food
This applies to pretty much most of the customers here. I understand that the portions here are massive, but you could at least be picky or ask for a takeaway box? What beats me is that every time I go to clear their dishes they say: "Thank you, it was really good. My compliments to the chef."
Yea bro yea, then why didn't you finish it or pack it? And when I mean don't finish, it's not just a little bit left behind on the plate, sometimes it's the whole plate untouched! I admit the portions here are massive but at least you could do takeaway or something? Every day I'm tipping an enormous amount of food into the bin which if could be salvaged is enough to feed a family of say... 4 for a week? And that's only on my part, what if you add up what everyone is tipping into the bin? There are so many people who can't even afford a proper meal a day (Sorry... I sound so auntie-ish) and you're doing this to your food. It's just plain disrespectful, both to the ingredients (Er... when they were still living that is...) and the person who prepared your food.

OK my rant is over :p

And just to be random, I'll just briefly talk about the media system in the place. It's a Japanese cafe, yet the songs on the system are 90% English. 2 Korean songs, no Japanese... Everyday I have been listening to the same music over and over again that I know which song is going to come after which. The 2 Korean songs on the track are BAP's Crash and of course, Gangnam Style, which I wonder why until now no one has started dancing randomly while serving... Because I certainly have seen customers start dancing randomly in their seats... Oh WTF we pride ourselves in having an immense amount of self-control to not smash up the player for playing the same songs so fkin many times... Initially thought of jacking the player and loading it with SNSD, IU and DBSK's Japanese albums on my last day but oh the joy... It's an awesome super-modern CD player... So got stuck with Ke$ha, Maroon 5, Avril Lavigne and Carly Rae Jepsen. Speaking of Jepsen, Call Me Maybe was on the tracklist and every time it played I'd singing to it and almost dying trying not to laugh... Why?
Yea that's why...

MmKBai :)

The Misadventures Down Under 2: 工作语录 1

Last day of work...

My manager walked past today and said: "Maxine, your last day? Next time if you wanna come back give me a call one week in advance OK?" I'm really touched T______________T

I actually like this job at the Japanese cafe a lot. So why was this my last day?

It started last Saturday morning. I was still asleep, and my phone rang. I was gonna just dismiss the call and let it continue ringing, but the screen showed a number I'd never seen before. Curiosity killed the cat, I picked up the call while cussing in all the 6500 languages spoken worldwide. A lady was at the other end and said: "I'm from xx Express (That random convenience store behind my house which pays $15 an hour for people to stand behind the counter and stare at the fridge.) Come down for a chat whenever you're free."

Genius managers they have here. They always seem to know when you already have a job, and they come up with a better one with higher pay...

I went over to the convenience store to check things out on Monday. The !@#$ manager seemed to be exploiting me because she would not be paying me for the training period, and I was like some slave for the day because I had to restock the fridge FROM INSIDE MIND YOU... It's like asking you to drink water but not giving you a cup... No that's a shitty metaphor but you know what I mean...

*But it's so near... And the pay is higher...*

So reluctantly I put on my best Oscar-winning-face-of-misery on Tuesday...

(Melancholic OST plays...)
M: I got my timetable...
K: But...? (He psychic or what...)
M: It's really packed... (Starts wiping imaginary tears pooling in eyes)
K: You could work once a week? Shorter shift? (Look of desperation)
M: My parents... They don't allow me to work anymore... (Starts sobbing uncontrollably...)
K: In that case, you can come back during the holidays then. I have a guy here who comes back once a year too, during the holidays.
M: Really? Thank you! (Eyes glimmer with hope and joy...)

Disclaimer: The above conversation was less dramatic in reality than portrayed. It does not protect users against STDs, TVs and STUVs. The person you have called is unavailable. Please leave a message after the beep. *Beep

OK wait so does that mean he's really desperate for manpower or he just plain loves me... Oh come on obviously... (Self-brainwashing)

Anyway now I can finally, proudly and truthfully say that I've been a waitress. I loved this experience, learned many things, met many people (and that includes the fact that I managed to slim down my thighs due to walking and standing for 8 hours a day non-stop on the job. xD).

Ah well, I'll miss this job, it's my first real job in Melbourne after all! :)

The Misadventures Down Under 2: Reporting For Duty!

*successkid.jpg

Fighting!

The Misadventures Down Under 2: Roach Invasion...

Yesterday night, or rather today morning I was being a good girl going revising my Korean language online lessons when suddenly I saw something black on my wrist. I flung my wrist and something dropped onto the table and crackled... Big, black, with long thin feelers and spiny legs...
!@#$%&...

My first reaction was: "FUCK YOU GET OUT!!!" *Blow blow blow swat swat swat...

It wouldn't budge.

So I sat on the bed watching it crawl all over my table. chair, printer... Really wanted to get a slipper and mash it but I'd dirty everything... And I'd be risking that it would get alarmed and fly...

If there is anything worse than a flying roach... No, there's nothing worse than a flying roach...

Imagining pokemon battle scene:
Wild cockroach appeared. Wild cockroach used fly. It's super effective... Human fainted.

So all I could do was sit there keep an eye on it and make sure it doesn't disappear... Oh OK now you can add disappearing cockroach on the "Worst things that can happen" list...

It got to a point I was going to pull all my hair out, run around in circles and scream. It was sitting still on my printer, so I went to the kitchen, got a glass, went back into the room. Thank coconuts it was still there on my printer. I crept up and tried to trap it with the glass. But unfortunately my aim was poor...

Luckily it didn't go far, and after some nudging and banging of chairs onto the printer, it went back up where I could catch it and I quickly cupped the glass over it, slipped a piece of paper underneath, took it to the toilet, let it crawl into the toilet bowl, flush, and laugh triumphantly. No actually it was more like...
Ahh... How nostalgic, I once disposed of another roach like this, 9 years ago... Besides the fact that the roach I sent swimming was a tiny little roach, not a big, black one...

Took me one whole hour to get rid of one fucking cockroach... And that night after the not so epic battle, I was not able to sleep, until 5 a.m....

The MIsadventures Down Under 2: I Got A Job, Again...

他也不知道怎么会知道我面对他也紧张到屁股爆炸,讲:“Don't be nervous, I'm very easy going.”

Kepong

The Misadventures Down Under 2: Random

The Misadventures Down Under 2: Day At The Beach

I went to Brighton Beach ^^

Weather that morning was quite cloudy, good for a walk outside.

Looking at the waves rolling onto the beach. Super got feel xD

Well that's nice, an old couple hand in hand...

Water was so clear you could see the rocks and seaweed underwater. (Kinda reminds me of the weird art teacher who asked us to draw rocks underwater in Form 3...)

Strange seaweed which looks like a mop... (or Temenggung Jugah's hair...)

Oh uhm sorry... Too free nothing to do...

There were black swans... :o

The Misadventures Down Under 2: Happy CNY From Down Under!

First day of CNY, I'm stuck in Melbourne, no cookies, no new year cake, no poker, no rummy, no friends, no family. Awesome as... ==

All I did was go to the city for a walk because there was a CNY procession in the city.

I'm usually an antifan of the colour red, but this year I made an exception...
Yeah, only for that reason...

Weather today was good. When I got there the procession had already started.

Not to be critical, but the dragon really looks like it broke its spine or something...

Not exactly better with the second dragon...
And then came two acrobats on stilts, dressed supposedly as a Chinese emperor and the queen? Looks more like... Like... Like... I don't know... Some servant from a Japanese manga? Or geisha? Or... Man I don't even watch Hong Kong dramas and I know the difference... *You don't say
Further down the road there were canvas tents set up. Many people set up stalls here...

Apparently, putting a potato on a stick increases it's value by 1000%... ==
Aaaand... I have no idea what real estate has to do with Lunar New Year either... To find out, call 1800638888.
Look at the crowd...
And I came across this stall flinging some tidbits to the passer-bys... In case you didn't see the bag of tidbits, it's highlighted with a yellow circle...

Further down there was a stage with some dance performances. Sorry, the angle from where I was taking this photo looks... Really wrong...

Nah well now you see it's not wrong, because they were wearing shirts with... Split colours. So one side is male one side is female... I bet that just made you even more confused... Never mind...

And since "Melbourne is such a multi-cultural city" they decided to give us some Brazilian dance by sexy ladies ooohhhhh... :O
Eihhhh... Sexy lady...
Last but not least, there were lion dances around the city. A few clubs went around the city performing lion dances for the Chinese owned shops.
Uber cool angmo drummer.
She looks even cooler here... ♥.

This just looks like... Lion: "OOOOOHHHH It's soooo pweeetttyyyy I wanna buy one!" *:3

What's under there? BROMANCE *Nigahiga style
And, I got so bored, went home, got my laptop, headed to uni because Wi-Fi wasn't fixed yet.

My first CNY overseas... Awesome as... =__________________= kthxbai

Oh by the way, Happy Chinese New Year! :D
