The Misadventures Down Under 2: Project Build A Teddy

There was this quirky little program in uni today organized by the Student Ambassador Club, Project Build A Teddy. At first we didn't give much thought to it because the guy who promoted it after lecture was so damn ugly no f##ks were given but later because a friend of mine came round asking we all decided to go.

Basically the program goes like this. You order a teddy bear, you stuff it (sounds like the toy factory got free labour...), and you choose to donate it or keep it. All earnings go to the Melbourne Royal Childrens' Hospital for pain and palliative management in the paediatrics department and the teddies go to the children in the ward (awww...). Which is pretty good because although kids are annoying, they are still humans, and humans have feelings, and one does not deny care to any human being in pain, even though they are annoying little kids... (•‿•)

We got there after lectures, got our teddies, made a wish and started stuffing. Every teddy also has his/her/its own birth certificate. And you can name your teddy too!

So...
Tadaa!!! o(≧∇≦)o

This is Benny. I named him Benny because... I can. Thou shalt not knowest the meaning behind the name of thee... (Grins) Nah actually if you know who my latest celeb crush is then it's a dead giveaway...(=`〜´=)

Benny was wearing a scarf too, but his big-ass birth cert covered it up and now you don't see it.
So knowing that Benny (and my money) was going to go for a good cause it really is a nice warm, fluffy, feeling inside. (ღ˘⌣˘ღ)

Good luck Benny! Get well soon kids!

P.S. Geez these Japanese emoticons are really fun! (≧ ω ≦)

The Misadventures Down Under: Another Update from the Editor

Lalala... Stay back late again today.

Yesterday morning we had our physiology practical where we had to dissect mice to have a "clear look and understanding of the urogenitary system"... When we went into the lab everyone was so calm... Like the calm before a storm. There on the table were "freshly gassed" mice lying on dissecting boards on the table.

Snowy white balls of fur... They looked so peaceful... Like they were sleeping... :'(

Oh and I apologise for this highly un-graphic post because the first thing we saw when we went into the lab was "NO CAMERAS PLEASE" written on the board... Uhm... Well... Not that there were many mesmerizing breathtaking scenes to be taken anyway...

After a very very very brief explaination by our lecturer we started by obtaining cells from the birth canal of the female mice. Which in a less romantic and scientific way means probing the !@#$% of the female mice with a toothpick covered with tissue paper...

I'm sorry I'm so sorry mousey I'm really sorry you know I really am sorry... T____________________________________________________________________________T

Yeah that was basically what I was mumbling throughout while swabbing and doing the dissection...
It wasn't that bad I guess... Blood didn't spurt here there everywhere as expected... Or rather imagined... Still feeling guilty... :(
We then had to observe and draw the urogenitary system of both the female and male mice, and also from the sample slides of testis, ovary and placenta. Well, for our mouse what my partner and I were looking at we couldn't really make head or tail out of it... Literally... Other groups had a really neat nice... Uh... Neat dissection whereas our mouse seemed to have made a rojak out of its insides... And it's a little hard I guess to draw organs just by looking at them... Well, I find it hard...

Oh well let's just say we managed to crap out a diagram of the system anyway by copying half from the prac manual sssssshhhhhhhh. Trust me the real thing doesn't look half as clear plain boring as the diagram... Same goes for the drawing of sample slides under the microscope...

Expectation:

Reality:

My placenta drawing looks too artistic to belong in a lab... =_________________________=

Oh well...

Halfway through our lecturer said: "Make sure you come over here and have a look at the mouse sperm." Oh OK. Looks through microscope... Sees mosquito larvae like things squirming here and there, some were lying there not moving, one of them had its tail bent at an awkward angle (ekor patah?)

At the end of the prac we cleaned up (whole place smells of chicken...) and took our diagrams up to the two demonstrators who guided us throughout this prac. Woh one of them looks like So Ji Sub kekeke... He checked my diagram...
D: This is good, you sure you didn't get this diagram from any prac manual...?
M: *Cocks eyebrows and act innocent* "Nooo..."
D: *Flips to back where my testis, ovary and placenta diagrams were... (Sounds like I have a testis =_=)* Yup this is good too. Wait... Did you see sperm in the testis???
M: *OH SHIT I COPIED THIS...* I... Thought I saw a tail... *Puppy dog face*
D: But they've been dead for so long!
M: *So sperm lose their tails when they die... Hmm... I'll be more careful from now on...* Hmm...
D: OK Wait let me check... *whispers to demonstrator beside* Yep, OK. I'll just tick you off the attendance list...

Phew...

After that, we had dispensing test, which basically is dispensing drugs found in a real pharmacy to imaginary patients with imaginary illnesses and prescriptions. Usually we would just skim through the exercises and everything was good, it is quite straightforward after all. But today it felt different. It felt like... One wrong word, one wrong label, one wrong drug, one wrong instruction you would get someone killed... Well, at least some of your marks, and a little part of your heart dies with it... So while it usually takes me less than a minute to type a perfectly fine label, today it took me at least 20 minutes...

A little part of me died during the prac...

And today I have completed 2 sets of PYQs as revision for the test on Thursday while spamming K-Pop hits on my phone. Sorry lappy, I love you... But life has been more productive without you... :X

Finals coming soon, which means December draws near. The thought that I will be going home soon just makes me so happy that my hair all falls off and I constipate for 3 days. Sigh... :)

The Misadventures Down Under: An Update From The Editor

I am blogging in the uni's 24-hour study space. It's 7.20 already, but I don't want to go home for a few reasons.

1. I don't want to go home
2. My lappie is dead I need to use the school computers. (Congratulate me. I really deserve a pat on the back, surviving without it for 8 days and counting...)
3. I don't want to go home.

Why not? Ahh... Stories which have accumulated until now. Can write into novel already... Anyway I'm more productive without my laptop *cough cough*

Tomorrow I have my dispensing practical test, on Thursday Drug Delivery test (Yes yes they test us on our abilities to deliver drugs without getting caught no just kidding. =______________________________________________________= ...) and on Friday Biomolecules practical test... Luckily Dispensing and Biomolecules are open book tests. But still... When all you can refer to is that and there are so many other spaces for mistakes...

I was hardcore-ing for tomorrow's test doing online sample questions and somehow got deviated to the portal page and I saw this announcement...

15 October 2012 16:35
Dear all, Drug Delivery exam will cover 75% of your total unit mark. Peter = 54 marks Suzanne = 11 marks Joe = 10 marks Total = 75 marks Time limit = 3 hours These questions require written answers. There will be no multiple choice question. There will be some calculation questions so bring a non-programmable Monash approved calculator. good luck! Suzanne

Yay... Die... Even my only hope for this subject, the MCQs have betrayed me...

Hope for the best :[ Can't wait to get all this shit over with...

The Misadventures Down Under: Calculations Test

Wake up --> Empty bladder -->  Brush teeth --> Wash face --> Breakfast --> Go to uni... --> Lecture --> Physio prac --> Lunch (Shin Ramyun Black :9) --> Jump up and down panicking because there is calculations test today...

Not just any calculations test. PASSING mark for this test is 80%, and if you fail this test, you fail the whole unit regardless of if you pass the final exams or not. Good thing it's an open book test (If it wasn't, you'd see in the news about a mysterious fire breaking out in campus...) And during prac I somehow noticed I went into the wrong folder in the portal, did the wrong exercises and missed out one whole section...

SHIT...

Went to the right folder, checked and was surprised to find submissions in the folder. Apparently the old "wrong" folder and new "right" folder were linked so I just missed one section... =__________________________= Well better than doing 11 exercises and finding out that you did all of that for nothing...

Panic panic panic, do practice questions, managed to crap out the right answers by randomly substituting figures into random formulas, times up, run back to uni, forgot student ID, run back again, get student ID, run in late, start test, hyperventilate. Good thing I live a stone's throw away from uni, literally. You could throw a stone from uni and hit my room window...

Ah well at least I finished everything in good time with ample time to look through and calculate everything once again :3 *LikeABoss*

Now hope that I didn't do any stupid mistakes which are worth committing suicide over... :(

Starting to become a scatterbrain... Wonder if it's juvenile Alzheimer's... Or dementia... But wasn't I always a scatterbrain? Hahahaha...

The Misadventures Down Under: First Taekwondo Training

我们大学只有一个奇奇怪怪不像篮球场也不像足球场,小到阳光普照,风和日丽的篮球场兼足球场 =_________________________________=

(今天才知道没有运动那么久,stamina 滚进沟渠了,一字马也开不了 T__________________________________________________T

The Misadventures Down Under: Random...

I am bored and I don't want to sleep...

Why so bored? Assignment not finished, presentation haven't done slides... They say the degree of boredom has a linear relationship with the amount of things to do and both increase proportionally... =____________________________=

This is miserable...

Hayden Quinn.

Google...

Cleo's Bachelor of the Year.

BACHELOR

*megusta face*...

Oh... Sorry...

屁股,我们哪里酱肤浅 =_____________________________________= 不过他屁股很翘是真的……

我想发扬我们炎黄子弟流传两千年的……(讲不出了)=_________________________________=

The Misadventures Down Under: Uni Blues...

Halfway through the first week of uni...

Wasn't very hectic though... First day was all introductory shit-I-don't-give-a-coconut-about lectures, well besides physiology (which also happens to be my favourite unit :D) where we started on the respiratory system.

The psychology essay is... I don't know. I can't find anything about it. So I'm going to type "I like bananas" on it and submit it like that... =_____________________________________________=

Yesterday our lecturer decided to give us a day off to party self-study and it was supposed to be nerd-ing day for me... So yes, I spent the day wisely reading One Piece thanks to SOMEONE who introduced it... self-studying. (The time spent ratio was approx 3:1 respectively =____=)

Note to self: From now on mangareader.net must be closed when doing assignments, studying, nerd-ing etc.

Today we had practical session where we oxidized benzyl alcohol into benzoic acid. Almost fell asleep standing in the lab...

I found a nice apartment. I applied to rent and I hope to get it. :)

Andy Allen is the winner of Masterchef Australia 2012! :D
He is awesome! But I prefer his "bromance partner" Ben...
Both are absolute eye-candy...
O.K. Dafuq I just see... .___________________.

And I was figuring you'd like to see this guy too. Beau Cook. 3 in a gang, Beau is a lightbulb...
That was random... But just an intro to what I do every evening at 7. Eat dinner while looking at hot guys cooking, and imagining that what you're eating is cooked by them. Then snap back into reality and cry...

O.K. Coconuts that was really random... Sorry... Kthxbai...

The Misadventures Down Under: Once Crazy Hell of a Sem Coming Up!

I'm Scared...

VERY SCARED...

Final week of hols, assignments already up. Human behavior essay. Deadline 31st August (MERDEKA! ==) Look at the guidelines and topics your first reaction would be: "WHAT THE FUUU IS THAT?!" 2000 words of complete... I don't know...

Speechless... Question 2 is like... Combining your KOMSAS with Psychology... Please explain by personality theory why Mr. Buchanan gave all the apples to the Governor to get him to stop taking his orchard. I don't know he was feeling generous apparently... (Actually he was a psychotic who forced the governor to eat all the apples until the governor was scared and let him and his orchard go... And please explain why the governor was scared using another theory...)

Something like that?

We also have to cut mice up... Mice... The poor things...
Aww...

How could one even...

We also have another 22 medicines to profile and memorize this sem! How exciting! I finished the profiling during the holidays to buy some time for other stuff. But the real problem isn't the profiling... It's the memorizing...

And the list goes on... This is only a portion of 2 of the units out of the 4 units this sem... (They just have not uploaded the rest to give us a surprise! =_=)

Sigh... Anyhow, hopefully survive this sem. I don't know how I did it last sem but some idiot must have swapped exam papers with me... The day the results came out, they really gave me a heart attack because I saw C and D on the grades, and I thought I failed... And had to take the 4 units... AGAIN...

Then I saw the unit which I got higher marks had a grade D, compared to the unit with lower marks which was given a grade C. Then it occured to me... C was Credit...

And for the first time, I rather get a D compared to a C...

The Misadventures Down Under: One Month Anniversary!

I was playing around with my phone and accidentally deleted my Google account (which makes no sense at all because my Google account uses my Hotmail address and all I deleted was the new Google account I created for my phone account which was synced with my Hotmail account WTF =_=). So my blog is moved here.

Anyways, I've been here one month already :D (Y) How am I surviving? I don't know... Seriously... How I survived that long here I don't know... Uni just makes you constipate and is a very good cure for diarrhea... =.=

We have classes on Wednesdays after all. Tutorials and practicals apparently. I was celebrating too soon... T.T Pracs are fun, most of the time...

Today we had to make aspirin for Organic Chem prac. So there we were in the lab, lab goggles fogging up, churning out suspicious looking white powder under the lead of our demonstrator. And, yeah well, it's pretty cool. Felt #likeaboss when scraping the powder from the Buchner funnel and packing it into the little plastic bags.

I heart my lecturer. He randomly came over and asked how do you find first year. Then he said I don't think you can see me through these goggles. He took off the goggles and rubbed some detergent on it to stop the fogging up. *Puts on goggles* (Beam of light shines down, holy music plays... Tears of joy stream down cheeks) He gave me sight!
=.= I feel so sad for myself...

In the evening, went down to the city to have dinner. It sounded so nice, miso-something something chicken don. Apparently in reality, it was nasi ayam kuah rojak =.= How... AUTHENTIC... Then hopped on a tram which took me somewhere I'd never been before. At one stop, I went down to find that I had boarded the 59 tram instead of the 19 tram... So had to wait for a tram to bring me back to the city, change tram and got back quite late.

That's it. My happy WTF one month anniversary.
